My Gun Buying Experience At Academy 4 Mar 2009

So I went to Academy yesterday looking for the Remington 870. Walked up tp the counter and there were a lot of people so I had to wait about 15 minutes or so before I was approached. I was looking at the defense shotguns in the meantime. Guy finally comes up and I asked if they had a Remington 870. He said no they did not and I saw this one black shotgun and I asked what kind it was. He said an HR 12 gage. I have never heard of HR so I asked if I could look at it knowing I wouldnt buy it 'cause I wanted the 870! Sometimes you know what you want! Anyway he handed it to me and it said Remington on one side and Remington 870 on the other! Mind you, it had no tags nor the brand, just the gun only. I said hey its an 870! Mgr. heard the commotion (excitement) and said oh yeah it came in last night and its the ONLY one we have and who knows when more will come in! So out came the CHL and debit card! 359 plus tax. I swiped it up quick fast and am now the proud owner of the renowned Remington 870. Pics included. Took about 20 minutes for paperwork and he had to carry it to the front door. Anyway I am stoked! Will go look for shells today as they had NO 00 to be had. For you Houstonians it was the Academy at 290 and Bingle area. I will shoot it in the next couple days.

That is model that hold 6+1 correct???

Dealer I spoke with said everything and I mean everything that remotely tactical is flying out at the speed of light.

They almost cant keep it in stock.

Correct.
You can tell by the picture that there is a magazine extension installed. On the non extended versions the magazine is capped right at the end of the forend's slide. In the picture you can see the ribbed, flared nut that mounts the extension as well as the barrel band that stabilizes it ahead of the forend. On the 18.5" barrel versions such as that pictured you can tell immediately if the mag is extended simply by looking to see if the barrel is even in length or longer than the magazine front. It's also a good guideline to determining the length of longer barrels when looking at a picture.

I know SLV GLD answered, but yes 6+1 it holds. Got some ammo today for it at Carters Country. 5.97 a damn box (5 to a box). Oh well, I will order more on the internet. Will shoot it next week. Got the 2.75 inch 00 Buckshot. What kind you got coming TA? Be sure and post a pic.

You got a fair deal. I didn't know 870's are becoming hard to find. Glad I got my Marine Magnum several years ago, they might be tough to find these days.

Some may assume I like dinky guns ... I do. I also like big shotguns ...

The one below has been outfitted with:
  • Speedfeed front and rear stocks holding 4 spring loaded shells ready.
  • Optional pistol grip.
  • High Intensity LED weapons light.
  • Red Laser sight (optional for pistol grip only)

Taurus Judge .45/410 is also depicted with 3" .410 5-pellet 000 buckshot. Also 12ga Brenneke slugs, CCI Blazer .45LC cartridges, field loads for practice...

I really like it better when I had it basic like yours. I also have a similar Mossberg with rifle sights and basic stock and 5-shot mag ... it points more naturally for me who grew up on 870s since I was 12 yrs old. They are a natural fit and point for me as from fsactory ... the fine Speed Feed pistol grip stock has a good but unfamiliar feel needs getting used to maybe. The minimal forearm is able to pinch your hand against receiver on the ejection cycle, ouch!

I used to hunt every season on SC swamp deer drives with dogs. Was required to use buckshot only due to impossible foliage obscuring normal vision and safety, even with hunter orange we often shouted "I'M HERE!!!"

I was overall very impressed with buckshot ... 00 and 000 generally went clean through a 180lb deer at 25yds, smaller stopped just under the skin on opposite side. It can break femurs instanty. Once a hunter was hit in the cheek by a 00 buck at what was claimed 400yds distant down a powerline and unseen ... it went in and out of his cheeks and took 2 molars instantly ... ouch! (some safety, and it glances off hardwood trees often for ricochets. Dangerous hunting)

Anything over 2 3/4" means only extra pattern density and range. Bigger buckshot generally holds a tighter pattern than small. My Browning modified choke BPS pump fired 3" magnum Federal 10-pellet 000 buck like a fkn rifle to 40yds, all 10 in the brisket. I chose it to hunt with and it worked fine but others preferred even #4 buckshot and killed plenty deer on the run. People forget the neural-shock of a handful of hits at ONCE. Like electricity in a way maybe.

I prefer #1 buck for defensive standby myself 2 3/4" 16-pellets of .30 caliber balls at 1,240fps as my all time favorite, do the math? (1.6 ounces and 16 holes) :bear_w00t:

Size Nominal diameter Pellets/oz
000 ("triple-ought") .36" (9.1 mm) 6
00 ("double-ought") .33" (8.4 mm) 8
0 ("ought") .32" (8.1 mm) 9
1 .30" (7.6 mm) 10
2 .27" (6.9 mm) 15
3 .25" (6.4 mm) 18
4 .24" (6 mm) 21
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotgun_shell

The #1 buck is a heavy hit, a balance of many holes, dense pattern and heavy mass -- but it kicks 30% harder than a field load atleast IMO ... but you won't even feel it when adrenaline is pumping, your heart rate at 150bpm + ...

Enjoy the Remington, a proud AMERICAN tradition ... we make the best pumps in the whole world! :ok: (my opinion only)

Yeah man ......avoid buying shells in the store like the plauge....You will get reamed.

The cost of shipping is more than justifed when you buy in bulk on the Net..I think cabbellas has a good deal going and you get a cheesy plastic ammo box (hey beats a blank).

I dont know the exact model but the assistant I spoke with said that is the "Home defense version" 18.5 barrel I assume it is just like yours.

That is a really KOOL setup and I luv the Judge too - don't have one but they look awfully handy. :bear_thumb:
